Between the two items it connects. NEVER at the start of a formal sentence.

Usually no comma in short pairs (apples and oranges). Comma before 'and' in long lists (a, b, and c — the Oxford comma).

Where it goes
Start of a new sentence, followed by a comma. Joins two complete sentences.
Punctuation
End the first sentence with a full stop. Start the next one with 'Moreover' or 'Furthermore', then a comma.

Use these to show that two ideas don't fit comfortably together. Hindi has 'लेकिन / किंतु / फिर भी / हालाँकि / जबकि'.

Where it goes
Between two complete sentences. Don't start a formal sentence with 'But' (use 'However' instead).

Formal version of 'but'. Use to soften disagreement or introduce an opposing point.

Three places: at the start of a sentence, right after the subject (with commas around it), or at the end.

Always put a comma straight after 'however'. Before it, use a semicolon (;) to keep one sentence, or a full stop (.) to begin a new one.

Never combine 'however' with 'but' — pick one. Same rule for 'although...but'.

although / though / even though'although' = formal, 'though' = neutral/informal.

Introduces a surprising or unexpected contrast — 'in spite of the fact that'.
Where it goes
Start of a sentence (followed by a full sentence), OR mid-sentence. 'Though' can also go at the end (informal).
Punctuation
Comma BETWEEN the two halves when 'although' starts the sentence.
