Word & Sentence Stress
The syllable stress differs in PHO-to-graph and pho-TO-grapher. In sentences, English emphasises content words — Hindi is syllable-timed, while English is stress-timed.
The rule
Word stress: one syllable in every multi-syllable word is louder/longer (the 'stressed' one). Sentence stress: content words (nouns, verbs, adjectives) are stressed; function words (the, of, is) are weak.
Explained
Stress is what makes English sound 'natural' rather than monotone. In every multi-syllable word, one syllable carries the weight. In sentences, content words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs) take stress; function words (a, the, of, is, to) become weak. Master stress and your English instantly sounds more native.
Examples
| English | In Hindi |
|---|---|
| PHO-to-graph (noun) — the stress is on PHO. | PHO-to-graph — ज़ोर PHO पर। |

| pho-to-GRAPH-ic (adjective) — the stress moves to GRAPH. | pho-to-GRAPH-ic — ज़ोर GRAPH पर। |
| I didn't STEAL his car. (someone else did) | मैंने उसकी कार चोरी नहीं की। (किसी और ने की) |

Common mistakes
PHOTOgraph-ER (stressing PHOTO)
phoTOgrapher (stressing TO)
The suffix -er often shifts the stress one syllable inward — 'phoTOgrapher', not 'PHOTOgrapher'.
I-AM-go-ING-to-OF-fice
I'm going to the OFFice
Function words (am, to, the) should be weak. Stressing every word makes you sound robotic.
DEvelop (stressing DE)
deVELop (stressing VEL)
Most verbs ending in -elop / -orm / -ide are stressed on the second syllable.
